Guidance contained within this website should not be considered legal or medical advice. This website provides information to support you in making an advance decision (living will) or advance statement. However, Compassion in Dying cannot give legal advice on individual cases. You should answer questions within this website based on consideration of the specific circumstances of the individual (the person the advance decision or advance statement is for), seeking advice from a legal professional if needed.

Compassion in Dying is not responsible for the content or reliability of any linked services or websites, and does not necessarily endorse any views expressed within them.

The personal data we collect

In order to use this service, you will need to enter personal information. Such information includes names, email address, postal addresses, other contact details, dates of birth, and the relationship of involved parties to the individual. We use this information to populate an advance decision or advance statement, and for no other purpose. Compassion in Dying does not see what you've entered into the website, other than your name and email address which we use to send you information about the website.

This website contains several free-text fields in which you are invited to enter certain types of information. You should not enter sensitive information into these free-text fields unless absolutely necessary for your application. Sensitive information may include, but is not limited to, details of religious beliefs and financial information. Entering sensitive information into these fields is done at your own risk, and Compassion in Dying is not liable for this.

By registering for and using this service, you consent to us using the data you enter to help you make an advance decision or advance statement that you can print, sign, and share with relevant people.

Your use of this online service is optional. If you prefer, you can make an advance decision or advance statement using a paper form.

How we store your data

Compassion in Dying takes data security very seriously and we take every step to ensure that your data remains private and secure. All data collected by this website and stored in our secure database is kept entirely within the European Economic Area (EEA).

Because of the global nature of the Internet infrastructure, however, we cannot guarantee that information emailed from us will be kept within the EEA. By submitting your information you consent to such transfers outside the EEA.

We'll never share your information with other organisations for marketing, market research or commercial purposes, and we don't pass on your personal information to any other websites.

Who has access to data in the service

Our hosting provider (Amazon Web Services) and our staff are responsible for supporting the service and have access to the secure database.

Information you enter into the service is not sent to us, but is stored in a secure database.

How long we keep data

Any information you enter into an advance decision or advance statement form using this online service is stored indefinitely unless you delete it. This allows you to keep access to potentially important data you or someone close to you may need in the future.

If an account has been created, but no advance decision or advance statement form has been started and it's been 9 months from the date you last used your account we will delete your account.

We'll email you before the 9 months is up to ask whether you would like to keep or delete your account.

Change or delete information you've provided

At any time you can change or delete the information you've provided.

You can also delete your own account, and all information in it, by signing in to the service, going to the 'Account settings' page and selecting 'Delete account'.

Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act 2018, you have the right to request copies of your personal data from organisations. The Act gives you rights over that data, including making sure it is correct, how it should be handled and when it should be deleted.

Compassion in Dying is the data controller for the personal information we collect.

Right to request copies of your personal information

This is known as the 'right of subject access', and a request for a copy of your personal information is called a 'subject access request', or SAR.

You can find out what personal data we hold about you in the service by making a subject access request. Compassion in Dying will then provide details of the information stored within the database, this will consist of all the personal data you have included in the forms you have created using this service.

Right to erasure

If the personal data we hold about you is no longer needed, you have the right to have it deleted. This is also known as the 'right to be forgotten'.

We do not accept liability for loss or damage incurred by users of this website, whether direct, indirect or consequential, whether caused by tort, breach of contract or otherwise.
